This research institution at the University of Chicago is known for asking architects to do the impossible and this project was no exception. Its Astrophysics department was creating nine separate electronics labs on three floors. Each space needed to house unique research equipment yet be flexible enough for future projects. Specialized features also included a 17-foot high clean room tent with a hoist crane and a room that shielded electromagnetic radiation. We navigated a complex planning process that required detailed understanding of the occupants’ needs and specialized equipment. And we created a detailed cross-referencing and documentation matrix to get everything right, nine different times.

The Lab space is for nine (9) separate researchers in the Eckhardt Center. The design was undertaken while the shell construction was ongoing, so we needed to work closely with the building architect, the University and each of the nine (9) PSD researchers.
